Traditional
Lnug Culture

Prior to the adoption of European customs there were 3 overwhelming influences on Lnug traditional culture.  The Moon, the Ocean & the dawn.  Lnug were frequently referred to by other regional people's as people of the dawn.  This is the name that stuck when we adopted the name Wabanaki for our confederacy.  However the Lnug are an incredibly lunar culture.  Not only is this to be expected from the latitude at which we live & evolved, but our territory is uniquely home to the largest tides in the whole world!

This & the fact that women have always played the preeminent role in Lnug society as the creators of culture demonstrates why the moon has had such a big influence on Lnug cultural development.

The people are to this day known for our commitment to the sea and the pull it has on us.  In this section we explore how these tidal forces shaped the language, food, architecture, fashion, art, & thus the People ourselves.

Ancestor Honouring

Ancestors have always been the guiding lights of our culture.  They stand as members of the sacred unbroken chain from those of us in the here and now, all the way back to our Great Creator.  Though no long in the physical, Lnug individuals are always part of our enduring nation.  This section is how we both honour and remember our loved ones.
If you have an acestor whom you would like to see honoured and remembered from within the lineage emai

Lnug Traditional Religion

In common with most Aboriginal nations, L'nug religion, "Ktlamsitasuti" teaches that all life was created by a single universal, creator, known as Kisu'lkw which translates to "The one credited for your existence".  Kisu'lkw is the combination of complementary feminine & masculine. Neither feminine nor masculine takes priority. Kisu'lkw's first creation was Kji-Niskam (Great Grandfather/Sun/Great Spirit).
